Set out below are images and the text of inscriptions from nine monuments and memorials within Christchurch, Rode.
On the south side of the sanctuary, the main Daubeny memorial is formed of Bath stone, and represents the Lord’s Table with a roll of a book, the Holy Bible, and a chalice upon it; on either side stands a life-size female figure, one representing Faith, the other Charity. There are three panels: (a) The marble centre panel (image 1, below); (b) In the left hand panel on a brass shield (image 2, below); (c) In the right hand panel on a brass shield (image 3, below).
On the north side of the sanctuary, the Daubeny family memorial is formed of Bath stone (erected 1837). Only two of the three panels are inscribed: (a) The left hand panel, in marble (image 4, below); (b) The right hand panel, in marble (image 5, below).
- SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF THE REV: CHARLES DAUBENY L.L.D. ARCHDEACON OF SARUM, FELLOW OF ST. MARY’S COLLEGE WINCHESTER, AND 52 YEARS VICAR OF NORTH BRADLEY, AND SOUTHWICK. DESCENDED FROM GILES LORD DAUBENY, K.G. (WHOSE NOBLE ANCESTOR ACCOMPANIED THE NORMAN CONQUEROR) HE WAS STILL MORE WORTHILY DISTINGUISHED BY HIS TALENTS, ACCOMPLISHMENTS, AND LITERARY LABOURS, AND ALSO BY HIS EXTENSIVE CHARITABLE DONATIONS. AS AUTHOR OF “A Guide to the Church”, HE WILL BE REMEMBERED WITH RESPECT AND GRATITUDE, BY EVERY SINCERE FRIEND OF OUR PROTESTANT CHURCH. HE WAS THE PROJECTOR AND FOUNDER OF CHRIST CHURCH IN BATH, THE FIRST FREE CHURCH ERECTED IN THESE KINGDOMS, AND LIKEWISE OF THIS CHURCH AND GLEBE. SIMPLICITY OF HEART, AND UNSHAKEN INTEGRITY OF MIND, WERE HIS DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICKS, TO THESE WERE JOINED A NATIVE KINDNESS AND BENEVOLENCE OF FEELING. HIS PIETY WAS OF THAT EXALTED KIND WHICH GOVERNS EVERY ACTION, SOFTENS EVERY SORROW, AND SHEDS THAT TRUE PEACE, WHICH NO EARTHLY BLESSINGS CAN BESTOW. HIS HABITS OF TEMPERANCE FROM HIS EARLIEST YOUTH, WERE GRACIOUSLY REWARDED BY THE FULL ENJOYMENT OF MENTAL AND BODILY VIGOUR IN OLD AGE. HE DELIVERED A CHARGE TO THE CLERGY, AND A SERMON TO HIS FLOCK IN THIS CHURCH, WITHIN THE LAST WEEK OF HIS LIFE, WHICH TERMINATING ON THE 10TH JULY 1827 IN THE 83: YEAR OF HIS AGE AFTER A FEW HOURS OF ILLNESS, RELEASED HIM FROM HIS LABOURS IN THE VINEYARD, (WE MAY PIOUSLY HOPE) TO RECEIVE HIS REWARD IN HEAVEN. “THE LAW OF TRUTH WAS IN HIS MOUTH, AND INIQUITY WAS NOT FOUND IN HIS LIPS; HE WALKED WITH ME IN PEACE AND EQUITY, AND DID TURN MANY AWAY FROM INIQUITY.” MALACHI 2: CHAP 6: VERSE THE REMAINS OF HIS MOST BELOVED WIFE EXHUMATED FROM THE CATHEDRAL CHURCH OF ST. PETER AND ST. PAUL IN BATH, WERE RE-INTER’D ON THE SAME DAY, AND IN THE SAME TOMB WITH HER HUSBAND, BENEATH THE CHANCEL OF THIS CHURCH. “THEY WERE LOVELY AND PLEASANT IN THEIR LIVES, AND IN DEATH THEY WERE NOT DIVIDED” 2:SAM:1:CHAP:23:VER: THIS TRIBUTE TO THEIR MEMORY WAS ERECTED BY LIEUT:COL: DAUBENY AND ELIZABETH HIS WIFE ELDEST DAUGHTER OF THE DECEASED.
- ARCHDEACON DAUBENY. DIED 10TH JULY 1827. AGED 83. ELIZABETH DAUBENY. DIED 13TH JANUARY 1823. AGED 68.

4. HENRY ARTHUR PHOENIX DAUBENEY LIEU. IN H: M: 55 REGIMENT. SON OF COLONEL HENRY DAUBENEY, AND ELISABETH HIS WIFE BORN ON BOARD THE PHOENIX, INDIAMAN. DIED AT SECUNDERABAD IN THE EAST INDIES. AUG. 24. 1837. AGED 22 YEARS. THE LAST PAINFUL OFFICES AND PIOUS DUTIES WERE PERFORMED BY HIS BELOVED BROTHER AT SECUNDERABAD A MONUMENT TO HIS MEMORY HAS BEEN ERECTED IN CHRIST CHURCH BATH, BY DESIRE OF HIS BROTHER OFFICERS, “AS A MARK OF THEIR ESTEEM AND AFFECTION.” AND “IN TESTIMONY OF THE DEEP REGRET THEY FELT FOR THE LOSS OF ONE WHO HAD ENDEARED HIMSELF TO ALL BY HIS GENTLE AND AMIABLE QUALITIES.” THE LORD GAVE, AND THE LORD HATH TAKEN AWAY. BLESSED BE THE NAME OF THE LORD

SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF MARY BARNSTON: ELDEST SISTER OF ELIZABETH WIFE OF ARCHDEACON DAUBENEY WHO DIED ON THE 12TH FEBRUARY 1817 AGED 74 YEARS AND LIES BURIED IN THE CHURCH YARD OF THE MOTHER CHURCH ALSO OF ELIZABETH, THE BELOVED WIFE OF MAJOR GENERAL DAUBENEY:KH ELDEST DAUGHTER OF ARCHDEACON DAUBENEY: SHE DIED AT FLORENCE THE 3RD APRIL 1844, AGED 61 ALSO OF THE REVD HENRY W. B. DAUBENEY. BA RECTOR OF KIRK BREMWITH, COUNTY OF YORK, SECOND SURVIVING SON OF MAJOR GENERAL HENRY DAUBENEY:KH COLONEL OF H.M.- 80TH REGIMENT WHO DIED AT FILEY, COUNTY OF YORK THE 2ND OCTR 1850, AGED 37 ALSO OF LIEUT. GENL. HENRY DAUBENEY, KNIGHT OF THE HANOVERIAN GUELPHIC ORDER, AND COLONEL OF H.M. 80TH REGIMENT OF FOOT, WHO DIED AT ROME, ON THE 10TH APRIL 1853, AGED 74. ALSO OF CHARLOTTE SOPHIA DAUBENEY, (SISTER OF THE ABOVE LT. GENERAL DAUBENEY,) WHO DIED AT EXMOUTH, DEVON, 30TH JANY 1859, AGED 69. ALSO OF THE REVD GEORGE WILLIAM DAUBENEY, ELDEST SURVIVING SON OF ARCHDEACON DAUBENEY: HE DIED AT SEEND, WILTS, 5TH JUNE 1860, AGED 75. ALSO 0F ELIZABETH HIS WIFE: DAUGHTER OF THE REVD CHARLES CRAWLEY, RECTOR OF STOWE, NORTHAMPTONSHIRE, SHE DIED AT SEEND, 3RD JANUARY 1884, AGED 92.

In memory of George Randall Orchard (Clerk) 23 years Perpetual Curate of this Church Obiit 21st June 1850, aetat 57 years Hebrews xii 6 “Quem euim deligit dominus, custigat flagellat autem omneum filium quem recipit” Seymour Portman Orchard; Obiit 23rd Augt 1837, aetat 7 weeks Austin Harding Orchard; Obiit 21st May 1840, aetat 16 years Also of Eliza, wife of the above, Obiit 8th April 1860, aetat 66 years.
NB: A similar memorial is repeated on a brass plaque mounted above the interior of the west door. This plaque was originally in the stone floor in the centre aisle.
7. IN LOVING MEMORY OF SUSAN KINTON. FOR OVER 40 YEARS, FAITHFUL & MUCH-LOVED TEACHER IN THE DAY AND SUNDAY SCHOOLS OF THIS CHURCH. DIED OCTOBER 12TH 1926. “Faithful unto Death.”
(nb: Susan Kinton, first a monitor and then a teacher at the Church School on Road Hill, was one of the children of Joab Kinton, who lived on Road Hill.)
8. IN EVER LOVING MEMORY OF THE REVD EDWARD PEACOCK, MA. JP. VICAR OF THIS PARISH 1850 TO 1874 DIED 14 JANUARY 1903 AGED 82 YEARS ALSO OF ELEANOR WIFE OF THE ABOVE DIED 21 MARCH 1897 AGED 69 YEARS THIS TABLET IS ERECTED BY THEIR CHILDREN
9. In loving memory of a beloved husband, the Revd W. H. R. Brickmann M.A., F.S.A., for 18 years, Vicar of this Parish, Who died June 9th 1891.
