Various correspondence relating to the Andrews family of Rode
email from Maureen Andrews
My name is Maureen Andrews from South Australia. I am researching my husband’s family who lived at Chatley Farm Tellesford from approx.1823 to 1868. John (b.1796) was orignally from Old Sodbury in Gloucestershire, while Elizabeth Timbrell (b.1793) was from Ramsbury in Wiltshire. We presume they were tenant farmers at Chatley Farm. All of their Children (except the eldest John) were born at Tellesford and their Christenings are recorded in the C of E Church. They also appear to have cottages and holdings at Hinton Charter House and we have the design for a stained glass window with an inscription that says it was erected by their son Robert in memory of his parents John and Elizabeth Andrews late of Chatley Farm. My husband is descended from the youngest son Robert Charles( b.1834) who migrated to Australia in 1859. Can anyone tell me if the stained class window was ever erected in Hinton Charter House C of E?
Why would they have come to Tellesford from Gloucestershire? Are they related to any of the other Andrews-eg in Hinton Charter House or
to Edward Andrews the Bristol Merchant who bought an Estate at Rode in the Mid 1700’s?

As far as I know we are not directly connected with the Andrews you mention. Two of John and Elizabeth’s children migrated to Australia – Thomas to Victoria in 1851 where he settled at Beaufort on the Victorian gold fields and my Husband’s GG – who settled in Adelaide South Australia in 1859. None of this family went to Queensland. Maybe the surname is more common in that part of England than in Australia and it is just a coincidence that they came to live in such close proximity or perhaps there was a connection in previous generations.
John Andrews (b. Old Sodbury 1796 and Elizabeth (nee Tembrell) b.1793 in Ramsbury Wiltshire were married in Old Sodbury abt.1820 and their first child John (b.1822) was born there.
All the other children were born at Tellesford and I have found the records of their Baptisms there.
These are William (1824); Thomas(1828), Daniel (1830),Richard (1833); Elizabeth1(834) and Robert(1835)
There were two Baily/Bailey connections . The mother of John Andrews (1793) was Ann Baily of Old Sodbury. She can be found living with them at Chatley Farm in the 1841 census. Ann’s marriage to John Senior can also be found in the Old Sodbury records – so we have three Johns – possible four if we go back another generation.
In the 1851 Census John Junior ( 29 yr – head of the Household) is living at Hinton Charterhouse. His father John is also there that night and is his father’s sister Ann Watt.(widow) (Could she have been housekeeping for young John?)
Elizabeth and the other children except William, are at Chatley Farm that night. John later married a Frances Catherin Bailey (b.1827- South Stoke). John Bailey Andrews was their progeny and I have traced his line to London.
We know that the Andrews also had Broadfield Farm at Hinton Charterhouse. John worked it for a while before taking up a bigger holding closer to Bath. But William Henry also had it. When the second youngest brother Richard visited Australia in about 1856 William took out an insurance policy on his life. We have the policy. He gives his address as Broadfield Farm.
In the 1851 Census Ann Watt and Robert Andrews (retired farmer) and Elizabeth Andrews (Spinster ,head of Household) all born in Old Sodbury are living at Hinton Charterhouse. I presume that these were the brothers and sisters of John Andrews (1796)
In relation to the Bezer connection (note the variation in spelling), Elizabeth’s sister Sarah Timbrell ( b. Ramsbury Wilts variously 1803 1804 1809) was married to John Bezer b.Warminster Wilts approx 1803. He was substantial farmer with 156 acres and laborers but must have died fairly early.
Sarah is shown in the 1861 census in the house of her sister and brother in law John and Elizabeth Andrews at Woodburn Buckinghamshire where they had moved from Chatley since the last Census in 1851. In 1871 she and her daughter Ellen are operating a school in Hinton Charterhouse,
email from Jacqueline ?
My gg grandaunt Sarah HUMPHRIES (parents John and Mary nee ALLEN) married 11 Mar 1851 at Hinton Charterhouse to William Henry ANDREWS. The marriage register suggests his father is James but I actually think that James is his uncle (or granduncle) because the best match for William Henry is the one baptised 25 Jan 1824 at Tellisford to John ANDREWS and Elizabeth TUMBRELL. I have John ANDREWS parents as Samuel and Mary nee DOEL. Samuel’s parents are William and Jane nee SINGER whilst his sister Sarah marries John DOEL. The DOEL family also marry into the HUMPHRYS family.
I think there must be other closer connections of the ANDREWS to my family because my grandaunt was named Sarah Elizabeth Andrews HUMPHRIES. You also mentioned BEEZER and my gggg grandmother was Phebe BEAZER (BEASE) wife of Jonathan SWIFT who married 1 June 1783 at Norton St. Philip. BAILEY also crops up on the periphery of my family tree but I don’t really have enough on them to be much help.
Please tell us a little more about the ANDREWS and BEEZER families. Regards, Jacqueline.
